Arthur: [00:00:00] Welcome, . Back with Pitching Passion. Today we have Cody Levine in New York. We're in Tribeca, in your family business, Smile House. New York is, it's a special experience for me being across the pond.. Today we're gonna be talking about oral care.
Your father being the king of dentistry, Dr. Jonathan
Levine also known as Dr. Sexy. Have you heard that before?
Cody: Honestly, I've heard a lot. They think he's ... That looks like Dr. McDreamy.
So I don't know. Dr. Sexy, that works.
I won't tell you how old he is- ... but he looks
Arthur: pretty damn good for
Cody: his age.
Arthur: . Tell us about what the Smile House is.
Cody: Yeah. So Smile House Tribeca
Arthur: is a new clinic we opened up as a family,
Cody: and it's the culmination of all
Arthur: of the,
Cody: Systems, and approach,
Arthur: and mindset
Cody: that my father's trailblazed
Arthur: in dentistry for close to 40 years. And we
Cody: up to build really a next gen clinic, we call it a dental longevity
Arthur: center,
Cody: [00:01:00] where we can help people really get to
Arthur: the root
Cody: cause of their
Arthur: issues.
Cody: Western medicine, if you think about our
Arthur: country, it's all symptom management, right? Oh, you have this symptom? Here, take this medication. It's gonna make
Cody: it hurt less,
Arthur: or
Cody: gonna dull
Arthur: your symptoms. It's not fixing anything, right?
Cody: That's Western medicine. Enter the world of integrative and functional
Arthur: medicine, and helping people really connect the dots on symptoms and
Cody: right?
There's no effect without a cause. And in dentistry it's very similar, yet it
Arthur: hasn't really been
Cody: understood widely or practiced widely
Arthur: because prevention is not aligned with our medical end unfortunately.
Cody: Not to sidetrack
Arthur: into American- yeah ... healthcare. But we created Smile House to really deliver
Cody: a [00:02:00] five-star hospitality
Arthur: experience in dentistry with a team that can take
Cody: care of the full scope of your health.
Because the mouth is the top of the digestive tract, it's the top of the respiratory
Arthur: system. It is the gateway
Cody: your
Arthur: whole health.
Cody: And if
Arthur: you can impact
Cody: upstream preventatively the mouth-
Arthur: You can impact everything that follows.
Cody: We're entering an era
Arthur: where
Cody: are starting to realize that the
Arthur: mouth is actually part of the body.
Cody: What a concept. So we're here, as we like
Arthur: to say, to
Cody: the mouth back in the body
Arthur: and connect the dots and deliver really
Cody: next-level care for our
patients.
Arthur: 'Cause if, for many people, they'll be thinking, oh it's a dentist. That's not what you are. No it isn't. So give us an idea. A listener's curious, they are on it with their health. They wanna maximize everything. They wanna know- ... and care for themselves and get the answers. What is the process for someone who comes in here, who you can help?
And give us an idea [00:03:00] on the array of things, services- ... that you offer people. Yeah. We've definitely found our niche in the
Cody: clinic for high performers, for people that you're talking about, wanna optimize, wanna improve their health. They wanna know. They're understanding that, hey, I could get data from
Arthur: all these tools- yeah
and technology and
Cody: AI today, but what do
Arthur: I do with that?
Cody: How do I get informed and then take
Arthur: action? And so
Cody: for us,
Arthur: we we're able to uncover sleep issues,
Cody: Airway
Arthur: and breathing related issues.
Cody: There's
so
much research and a growing body of work around airway
Arthur: and sleep-disordered breathing
Cody: which is basically our inability to sleep deep
Arthur: because of an airway issue, right?
So we're not getting enough oxygen throughout the night. We're not breathing properly, and it's causing us to have poor
Cody: sleep.
So you can uncover through our
Arthur: sleep and airway evaluation- ... what's going on, right? Why don't I sleep so well?
Cody: I slept eight hours, but I feel
Arthur: like I slept two every night,
Cody: right?
We get a lot of patients like that, whether they have sleep apnea or upper [00:04:00] airway restriction 'cause
Arthur: you
Cody: a narrow upper arch in your jaw,
Arthur: which
Cody: causing overcrowding- and it's gonna cause these downstream health impacts. The diagnostics that
Arthur: we do here
Cody: help really uncover that. Sleep and airway, we test your saliva here.
So we're
Arthur: looking at
Cody: bacteria
Arthur: makeup in your mouth, right? Like your gut, if you ever get your- ... gut
Cody: work done or your blood work,
Arthur: this is looking at your saliva.
Cody: So much we can uncover.
Arthur: Inflammatory markers, collagen breakdown, which
Cody: basically
Arthur: gum health and bone health breakdown in
Cody: mouth.
Arthur: We can see this
Cody: early through our saliva.
Arthur: So you
Cody: come in through our mouth mapping assessment, and you can uncover all these different biomarkers and how they're all connected. And we start to see, okay these issues you're having are actually connected to this
Arthur: upstream driver, and
Cody: all these other
Arthur: components and feelings you're having, brain fog, a hard time
Cody: waking up in
Arthur: the middle of the night, low energy, fatigue, all these things w- can actually [00:05:00] be uncovered here at a dental longevity clinic.
And then also aesthetics, right? People like, listen maybe they work in Hollywood, or maybe they want to have a smile that looks a million dollars- for themselves. That's what you can do for people, right?
For sure.
Cody: Aesthetics,
Arthur: Is
Cody: core part of what
Arthur: we do.
Cody: And the most important thing is that aesthetics
Arthur: are connected to structure, function, and biology in the rest
Cody: of the mouth. So a beautiful looking smile, it doesn't stop there, right? Everything as a system has to work well together. Your bite.
Most veneers or bonding will break because your bite's
Arthur: bite's not adjusted. You're not biting properly,
Cody: or there's something going on structurally
Arthur: or functionally- ... that actually
Cody: you might look great for a minute, but the longevity of those teeth are not optimized. So we deliver beautiful aesthetic
Arthur: cases. We got
Cody: fix Jack Hughes' teeth after the gold medal game which you saw the jersey upstairs.
My father has led the way [00:06:00] since the early '80s, one of the first doctors
Arthur: in the country to do porcelain veneers in
Cody: early '80s. And that was the biggest revolution in aesthetic and
Arthur: cosmetic dentistry,
for the last
Cody: 40 years. And so all of our aesthetic cases are so methodically done,
Arthur: and technology has enhanced
so much.
You come in, we take
Cody: series of photos
Arthur: and imaging. We can visually render a digital
smile
before we even start the work So
Cody: there's no drilling, there's no nothing. You visualize, right? Identify
Arthur: and visualize what you can look and then you
Cody: craft the shape and the color and
Arthur: everything
Cody: perfection.
It's an art and a science, right? Yeah. Everyone's face is so unique, so dynamic,
Arthur: and how do you match
Cody: smile to that
Arthur: face? That's pure artistry.
Cody: Versus like a
Arthur: one size fits all.
Cody: Aesthetics are a core part of
Arthur: what we do here. And if I said to you "Do what you need to do.
I need to look $50 million." Yeah. How much could that end up taking me back? A
Cody: full mouth [00:07:00] reconstruction as we call it, so upper
Arthur: and lower veneers
Cody: across, let's say you're looking at 10 to
Arthur: at 10 to 12 teeth on each
Cody: upper and lower. It could be a
Arthur: six-figure case 100 plus- .. to really do it at
Cody: at the best quality
Arthur: level.
Cody: Our ceramist's from
Arthur: Italy-
Cody: Handmade, handcrafted highest quality
Arthur: materials.
Cody: We put so much time
Arthur: and effort into each case, and we
Cody: design it so
Arthur: specifically for you that you really feel like, "Okay,
Cody: This is gonna last
Arthur: 30 plus years."
Cody: My dad
Arthur: has patients
Cody: who have had veneers in their mouth for the last
Arthur: 30 plus years- Wow.
Cody: which
Arthur: is really amazing. Smiles can tell thousands of words around, what's happening with someone- ... internally, externally. But, h- confidence is so related to looks. How do you connect with that? Yeah. I think your
Cody: ability to show up as purely yourself as possible, I think is the ultimate goal, right?
Arthur: You,
whatever
Cody: go through or grow through, you [00:08:00] always come back to self
Arthur: and being connected to yourself. And the smile is an expression of And when people hold themselves or cover their mouth when they or they don't feel
confident
to
fully express themselves
Cody: photo, smile in photos,
It's just a, it's a limiting factor for
Arthur: living life to And I
Cody: connect with that where when you feel confident in your smile, it's just one less
Arthur: thing holding you back - ... from, that
So- Yeah ... and
Cody: look, some folks, it's genetic or
Growing up they didn't have access,
Arthur: or
Cody: people didn't know enough and okay, you're here today, right?
Arthur: You're here and,
Cody: If you wanted
Arthur: to
Cody: really unlock that confidence-
Arthur: ... In
Cody: smile, there's a handful of
Arthur: different ways you can do that.
Cody: It really does start with the daily little
Arthur: habits. .
Cody: Not just
Arthur: getting porcelain veneers. That's not the answer.
Cody: It can certainly help, but it's really [00:09:00] about taking control of your-
oral
Arthur: health. And then everything from there. Speaking of taking care of your oral health- Don't think twice, think once about it Yeah. This is the brand you and your brother have built, right? Yes. Tell us about it. Yeah. Wow, look at that marketing. We usually want, branding, packaging.
Yeah. This is the crème de la crème.
Cody: Twice brand the Twice products, we've built a full system of oral care products that help people,
Really find a routine around
Arthur: doing it twice In America, 100 million Americans,
Cody: nearly a third of us, don't brush their teeth twice a day, right?
Arthur: So
Cody: in the morning when you wake up-
Arthur: once at night before you go to
Cody: bed. Believe it or not, 100 million,
Arthur: they skip
Cody: out.
Arthur: And
Cody: single day you're doing that, it's like compounding negatively. It's like a downward spiral. So the Twice brand, it's bright, it's yellow, it's happy, it's positive. . We designed it around the twice-a-day routine.
[00:10:00] So we've got toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, teeth-whitening products, toothbrushes. And we wanted to elevate and enhance the everyday,
Arthur: and bring
Cody: brightness and joy back into the bathroom, back into that two-minute routine
Arthur: when you're brushing- Yeah ... your teeth,
Cody: and deliver really high-quality products that improve people's health.
Arthur: And your toothpaste, aside from looking like the one that we want- Yeah ... why do we want this one- Yeah ... versus others?
Cody: Formulation,
Arthur: there's so many choices out
Cody: You walk down the aisle, whether you're in a pharmacy or a grocery or big box retail. We sell it in Walmart.
Arthur: I'm not
Cody: if you've been to Walmart yet as a expat from across the
Arthur: the pond.
Cody: But if you haven't, Walmart is one of the
Arthur: most amazing places
Cody: can ever go
Arthur: to really understand American
Cody: but you walk
Arthur: down the aisle and there's so many and
Cody: Big businesses have
built products
that are affordable.
But at
Arthur: the,
The fault or
Cody: at the downfall of quality and
health. [00:11:00]
So we designed, I don't know if you've ever been to Erewhon.
Arthur: Erewhon in America is like
Cody: the other end of super high-end, high-quality products. So think Erewhon quality at super low affordable prices. Okay. Every ingredient in our product is intentionally there to improve your oral microbiome, improve the strength and whether it's cavity prevention,
Arthur: sensitivity relief.
Cody: We have a series of different SKUs and products. We're always innovating on
Arthur: new- ... ingredients and new formulations.
Cody: This is like an ice bath for your mouth. It's a mouthwash that helps reset the whole ecosystem,
Arthur: helps raise pH,
Cody: oral pH. When it's alkaline,
Arthur: your
Cody: can remineralize, and when your mouth is acidic, like drinking a coffee your teeth will demineralize and start to break down.
So we get to control the environment,
Arthur: In our of,
Cody: our products.
Arthur: Do you have a fact around why people need to floss?
Cody: Nine out of 10 of us are walking around with some
Arthur: form of inflamed gums, [00:12:00] gingivitis. Bleeding gums are not It's not
Cody: something that you say, "Oh, it's bleeding one day. Whatever,
Arthur: I'll just
Cody: brush it under the rug."
Arthur: Bleeding gums are a
Cody: red flag signal that your body's
inflamed.
Inflammation in the mouth seeds the rest of the
body. Flossing
Arthur: is the easiest hack.
Cody: you don't like flossing,
Arthur: try these.
Cody: Triple
Arthur: strand floss picks.
It's
Cody: first time anyone's put three strands into a single floss
Arthur: pick.
Cody: It's like you're pulling out all the food and bacteria and plaque and- biofilm
Arthur: in between your teeth. It's a deep clean,
Cody: and it's actually makes flossing quite fun.
Arthur: You're like, "Whoa, I didn't know there was so much stuck in between my teeth."
And that bacteria, that food
Cody: goes overnight just wreaks havoc, turns into an acid attack, starts breaking down
Arthur: your teeth,
Cody: starts causing
Arthur: inflammation. And
Cody: then you've got a whole b- Project X on your hands inside your mouth. Yeah.
Arthur: It's a- ... it's a disaster. And, a- and life w- watching it all on problems.
[00:13:00] Yeah. You've sold most of the business then, or are you... what?
Cody: the business then or are you involved? We, yeah we've got a business partner-
Arthur: Yeah ...
Cody: that is continuing to build it. Sold it about
Arthur: two years ago. Okay. Majority ownership, and,
Cody: we're still involved, still work on product.
They're helping us really take it to a whole
Arthur: other level.
Cody: There's so much opportunity
Arthur: in our country,
Cody: To deliver high quality products- ... at accessible price
Arthur: points and get really quality products in people's homes.
Cody: So yeah, we're cr- creating new products.
Arthur: Got a whole kids line- Yeah
coming out. Amazing. Proud of that. Can we touch on the numbers? We've sold millions of tubes.
Have reached-
Cody: Hundreds of thousands
Arthur: of homes which is really cool. It's been an eight-year journey,
Cody: and it feels like we're just getting started.
Arthur: Yeah.
Cody: Luckily , we're able to reach our country through a great partnership with Walmart.
Where
Walmart touches about 95% of America within a
10-mile radius.
Arthur: Wow. Wow. And when you can
Cody: put high quality products at
Arthur: an
Cody: price on those shelves-
Arthur: ... You're able to get So yeah, we've sold
millions of tubes
Cody: toothpaste. And
Arthur: our
Cody: [00:14:00] products as well. It's
been a really fun
Arthur: What are you most grateful for having set this up?
Cody: Oh,
Arthur: man. Building a business
Cody: from scratch
Arthur: is incredibly challenging,
Cody: but so rewarding. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity
Arthur: to do it, build it with my brother, my older brother. Yeah.
Cody: And,
Getting to really challenge ourself
In going up against Crest and Colgate and Sensodyne- these multi-billion dollar conglomerate
Arthur: businesses.
And impact people's lives. When people
Cody: say to me or reach out or meeting someone, "Oh, I use your products. I love
Arthur: them." Like- Yeah ...
Cody: we get to create
Arthur: change in people's through oral for that, I'm eternally
grateful. Working hard in any respect, be it sport or, for work teaches us a lot about ourself.
What have you learned about yourself
Cody: yeah. So
Arthur: much.
Cody: a
Arthur: a business is a personal journey,
Cody: Of growth and development. It's taught me so much about
Arthur: patience and persistence. You just have [00:15:00] finding a way
Cody: have a saying in
Arthur: the family, "It's not the
Cody: problems you face,
Arthur: it's
Cody: you face those problems
Arthur: and
Cody: really.
Arthur: It's inevitable,
Cody: right? Things are gonna come at you,
Arthur: headwinds in front of you,
Cody: But
Arthur: it's about how you respond, right?
Cody: How do you handle
Arthur: them? How do you navigate? Because
Cody: that's what you're gonna grow through.
Every challenge
Arthur: is an opportunity to create something new to learn and to get- better at the process,
Cody: the journey, it doesn't get easier to build a company over the longer
Arthur: time you're doing it.
Cody: Just get better at managing problems.
Arthur: And I think you learn that
Cody: yourself. You learn what you're really good at.
Arthur: You learn your unique ability.
Cody: You learn, okay, maybe I'm not so great at this.
How do I bring someone on
Arthur: who's smarter than me?
Cody: How do
Arthur: do you surround yourself with really great people- ...
Cody: who can help bring your
Arthur: thinking up and push you and challenge you?
Because you can't do it on your own. It's not a
Cody: solo sport.
Arthur: What... in the words of your father life's a team [00:16:00] sport.
Do you find it easy to reach out to people when you're, "Oh, God, this is..." Either it's like something that you need help with, or you're like, "Oh, this is hard and I actually need to speak to someone about it 'cause I'm finding it difficult." Yeah.
I think as an entrepreneur, one of the hardest things and I dealt with this, is the, ability to ask
Cody: for help.
And sometimes when you're building, you're just like I could just figure it out, I can just do it, or you just take on so much. And you have a hard
Arthur: time at raising your hand.
Yeah.
Cody: It's critical to to reach out, to build a network,
Arthur: to connect with people who have been through probably the same things you've having a mentor,
having a community of like-minded entrepreneurs. I've been super fortunate. I've...
Cody: My six closest friends are all building something on their own.
And
Arthur: you commiserate
Cody: over the problems, and the challenges, and the struggles,
Arthur: and
Cody: it molds you, it shapes [00:17:00] you. And so having that is what can get you through a lot of tough
Arthur: times.
Cody: And of course, help unlock something.
Can't be afraid to ask for help because when it comes from the right place of wanting to build something- that can help others, right? That could create value for people- ... then your ask is actually,
Arthur: Can be you giving, if that makes sense. Totally. You don't have to feel like you're just- Yeah ... asking, taking. It's actually
Cody: if I
Arthur: can come from a giving place, then can my asking actually be
Cody: a net positive for the person you're asking?
Arthur: So interesting. Certainly all the people who I find
the most inspiring they're focused on contribution. And it's not from like what do they get perspective, they know that they can contribute in an area, and they love it. And maybe that's an industry, but they just absolutely love it.
Jumping into the times, s- slightly and as you... I... We touched into it in a previous interview, is sometimes when you're pushing hard 'cause there's so much you [00:18:00] need to take- ... sometimes we just need to just take a step back and just be gentle with ourselves.
Are there any things that you find quite useful
Maybe it's being particularly authentic and open with people, or it's doing something for yourself that's important. Very simple. Reading or just getting away.
Cody: Totally.
Arthur: I
Cody: if you don't take care of yourself along the way, you're gonna pay,
Arthur: you're gonna
Cody: for it later.
Arthur: And
Cody: people talk about balance,
Arthur: and some
Cody: balance is that there is no balance. find a way, which I- I think there's a medium where you have to care for yourself. And
Arthur: for me,
Cody: in order for me to show up in my best version, where I can
Arthur: be with the team, I can be- Yeah
building, I can
Cody: solving problems, I got a clear head I know I have to go through a series of steps
Arthur: in order for myself
Cody: get there.
Starts with daily movement. The mornings are, like, precious. I don't know if you've ever read 5 AM Club, Robin Sharma, great book. It's basically about how do you set
Arthur: your morning.
Cody: [00:19:00] Whether you wake up at 5:00 AM or not,
Arthur: it doesn't really matter.
Cody: just a matter of are you doing s- things for yourself like movement or learning and creating that space for you to really sit and be present in where you're at and find that, I call it the getting
Arthur: altitude,
Cody: right?
Get above it all and just take a breath. Yeah.
Arthur: And to be able to, like, all right,
Cody: not be so obsessed with where you're, g- the future destination. It's like, all right I'm
Arthur: in this journey.
Cody: Daily movement for me some form of meditation or breathwork practice is kinda what helps me unlock a next level dimension.
So that's a key part of my process. And yeah, I think if you're always
Arthur: learning and always curious. I'm currently reading a book about airway and breathing.
Cody: It's called How We
Arthur: Breathe Is Killing Us,
Cody: and it's a lot of
Arthur: Really interesting subject matter that we get to do here- Yeah
to help improve
Cody: health through [00:20:00]
Arthur: You gotta have tools. Your father has the most amazing quote. To be hungry and humble
how do you relate to that?
Cody: It's,
been
Arthur: day one for me.
Cody: My dad's been my coach my whole
Arthur: life, and you gotta be
Cody: like a lion
Arthur: every morning. But you gotta be down on the farm. You gotta be experiences humble you, and always
Cody: know,
That
Arthur: you can't
Cody: let ego take over.
You gotta come from this grounded base.
Arthur: It's just
Cody: I am and how I
Arthur: was raised. You meet my parents,
Cody: they've been married - coming up on 45 years,
Arthur: and,
Cody: They instilled hard work and dedication, and,
Arthur: Resilience, and humility, and...
Cody: you can see
Arthur: things, and you
Cody: see excess,
Arthur: and you
Cody: see
Arthur: wealth-
Cody: and you can see what
Arthur: some people
Cody: as success. But I think the real success is in the process of building
Arthur: And surrounding yourself
Cody: people- that fill you [00:21:00] up, and having a mindset of
Arthur: anything is
Cody: So yeah you gotta be hungry and tenacious to go
Arthur: create
Cody: future, right?
You're the master of your own destiny. And also humble enough to
Arthur: to really
Cody: move through it with grace and appreciation for the
process.
Arthur: Is there a surprising source or a, a particular source that has brought you to finding and growing self-value?
There's many
Cody: I find it in a few unconventional ways.
I think
people need to move their body, . whether you're working out or training
Arthur: for something or just
Cody: I find that through
Arthur: movement and dance,
Cody: can actually come back to yourself- in a really pure way. Wow. Like,
Arthur: just being a kid again.
Yeah.
Cody: And just letting it flow,
Arthur: not having to be so- yeah ... stern or,
Cody: I
Arthur: have to be this type of person. [00:22:00] It's like we're really dynamic beings. Yeah. So I've...
Cody: As
serious as we are about business,
Arthur: Being playful and fun and- ... letting loose and just dancing.
Cody: There's a great musician who's actually from your neck of the woods, Fred Again..
If Fred, he blew up during COVID, and he used a sample
From, a, I
Arthur: think it was a Zoom meeting where a woman
Cody: saying that we lost
Arthur: dancing during COVID. And
Cody: I've found that return to
Arthur: dance can
Cody: unlock
so much
for you. But yeah, my journey I've gotten to unlock self-worth
Arthur: and- feeling confident in who I am,
Cody: loving my life, and being so grateful for my
Arthur: journey,
Cody: Through a lot of modalities.
But
... Don't forget to
dance-
Arthur: and have fun. Yeah. Shaking it out.
Can you educate everyone about the mouth? It's one thing you're always told, "Hey, brush your teeth. Do the floss." And you talk a little about how habits are important to you- Yeah ... and how [00:23:00] you are able to contribute, and that you need that base, right?
But I think often being, told about the dangers of not doing something is the best way of working out- Yeah ... why we need to do things. Looking after the mouth, doing the things that we know that we should be doing.
Cody: Twice a day.
Arthur: Why should we look after the mouth?
Cody: Yeah, it's a great question. I think growing up it was like, "
Arthur: Oh, you're gonna have a cavity," or, "You're gonna need to go to the
Cody: but
today the mouth has been linked
Arthur: to systemic disease
Cody: that has
Arthur: taken too many people too early,
Cody: right? Think about
Arthur: family history of dementia
or cognitive
Cody: or heart attack risk-
Arthur: cardiovascular
diabetes We deal with these on a daily in
Cody: country and around the world.
Arthur: And
Cody: the mouth, the
Arthur: bacteria in
our [00:24:00] state of our oral our daily
Cody: are deeply
Arthur: linked
Cody: to plaque found on our heart- plaque found in the brain,
Arthur: and you can impact
Cody: your health span, right, how healthy you are while you're alive, and your lifespan, how many years you live,
Arthur: today by taking care of your teeth and your
Cody: People
didn't know that five, 10 years ago.
Arthur: They
Cody: thought that, "Oh I need to brush
Arthur: my teeth 'cause that's what my parents
Cody: me to do."
But it's so deeply linked. The, the plaque on our teeth is found in our heart and in our
Arthur: brain.
Cody: So
Arthur: Wow.
So
Cody: if you wanna, if you care about being
Arthur: healthy and having healthy years and spending more time with your grandparents- ... and your parents, and for
Cody: kids to spend
Arthur: more time with your parents- ... on this earth, you know- Yeah ... you're gonna care about your mouth. A lot of people are scared of the dentist. [00:25:00] Created over,
film and culture, at least
Cody: in our country. It's got a
Arthur: stigma-
Cody: Around just drilling
Arthur: and filling.
And it's painful, and
Cody: anxiety
Arthur: inducing. We wanted to flip that script and- ... help people feel comfortable and confident- ... in
Cody: going to the
Then-
Arthur: it is quite something that, this isn't about aesthetics. This is about life expectancy. Yeah. And, thinking about, I've come here to New York, meet really inspiring people, learn about interesting things that's going on, hear about your family and your incredible work. Such a fascinating learning today around the connection between oral care and how long you live.
No wonder people are coming here to your incredible place, 'cause they can live longer. Yeah. And have healthier years. Now, are there two occasions that have , felt quite emotional to you? Maybe it's a story that your father has or you've heard about how you as a family have impacted them.
One really unique
Cody: part about my dad and our team here [00:26:00] is,
Arthur: The
Cody: ability to diagnose and uncover really what's going on. So
Arthur: people
Cody: come to us with,
Arthur: Complex issues, autoimmune issues,
Cody: multifactorial things that a lot of doctors
Arthur: really solve.
Yeah. And
Cody: quite often
Arthur: we hear from patients
Cody: that after a series of visits,
Arthur: Debilitating pain, whether it's in their neck or in their
Cody: jaw
Arthur: or in their back- Yeah ... after a few
Cody: visits and after probably years of
Arthur: not being able to fix it. If you're
Cody: not healthy,
Arthur: You're not really able to fully live.
It's like something
Cody: always pulling at your ankles.
Arthur: And when we have those patients in who have had something brewing- ... no one can really put their finger
we've had patients like that since we've opened that- ...
Cody: in a series of visits with my father, we can uncover what's going on, see, okay, this was
Arthur: in the past and,
Cody: here's what I think is
Arthur: this, and let me, here's the [00:27:00] intervention
Cody: I wanna pivot and tweak on, and
Arthur: let's see how this improves.
And
Cody: Obviously I can't share any-
details on,
Arthur: Patient info,
Cody: but that feeling
Arthur: of a patient saying, "Wow you've changed my life and taken me out of pain and-"
Cody: All the people that I met in the past, they tried, and,
Arthur: We couldn't uncover it and we can solve that. It's
Cody: like a great mystery-
that we
get to solve.
Arthur: ... And get
Cody: people out of pain
Arthur: and back into their life. Saving marriages. . You know how many people, how many husbands sleep in other rooms
Cody: because their wife kicked
Arthur: them out years ago? "You snore
Cody: so loud, you're disrupting my sleep, and I can't take
Arthur: it anymore." And
Cody: they're down the hall
Arthur: in another room,
Cody: and we can actually help them uncover why they're snoring,
Arthur: what
Cody: is going on with their airway, possible sleep [00:28:00] apnea, and how to treat them the right way.
Arthur: And next thing
Their
Cody: snoring goes away.
Arthur: They're taken
Cody: care of every night.
Arthur: And
Cody: they're back
Arthur: I love it That's pretty cool
Arthur: You look we got this amazing book behind us, Unreasonable Hospitality, which if anyone's not read it, ...
Cody: ron Gaudet
is goat.
Arthur: Book if we really wanna learn about,
The greats, what they're reading this book is an absolute classic.
This book really demonstrates what you're about here. ... Really looking after people. And a lot of people do fear the dentist, 'cause like rationally, right? Like they go there, it can hurt, . [00:29:00] And here you come into this home with this family you have created.
Having heard things about them, it's community is everything to them. Yeah. And wow, endless fuel that can give for peoples in their life, creating joy internally, but, making things happen, be it products, be it businesses being able to contribute.
So you've turned something into such an opportunity here. What a privilege it is to be in this space. Just jumping in, your foundation the Glo Good Foundation. That's it. It needs attention. Why?
We get to change people's lives through the smile.
Cody: And the mission first started back in 2011,
Arthur: and
Cody: I joined my mom and dad on our first Glow Good
Arthur: Foundation mission. Yeah. And we
Cody: helped a woman who lost her front teeth, four front
Arthur: teeth, and we
Cody: gave her smile back.
Arthur: And when you can when you can do that you
Cody: open the gates for them for life to just flow right back into
Arthur: them. And you light [00:30:00] them up like a Christmas tree.
Because
Cody: they
Arthur: look in the mirror and they can smile and . the
Cody: love for themself comes rushing back. It's a blocked
Arthur: dam- Yeah
that you
Cody: gotta clear out and just let it flow.
Arthur: And we
Cody: get to do that in the foundation everywhere we go.
Arthur: Wow.
Cody: We bring an amazing team, medical and dental, from around the world. We've got folks from London Spain and all across Europe and South America that come with us and help people
Arthur: and be in service
Cody: because our providers have skills.
Arthur: They can
Cody: help people with their
Arthur: hands.
Cody: And
Arthur: when you can give that
Cody: service back to others with no- nothing in return, there's no payment- ... there's nothing but glory and the feeling of helping others.
Arthur: That
Cody: really shifted everything for me and us as a family to have a business with soul and to be able to give back- around the world
Arthur: even in
Cody: your own backyard for folks who don't have access.
Arthur: And, how many people have you, have you been able to- Thousands. Thousands of people. Yes. Every year we render [00:31:00] millions of dollars of free dentistry. And what's the challenge? How can we make this bigger?
Cody: Yeah. It's always how do we help more people? Yeah. How do we
Arthur: continue to grow the mission? Yeah.
Cody: How do you get supporters
Arthur: can continue to elevate it?
Cody: What started in a,
Arthur: A
Cody: old community center with mobile equipment that broke down every 20 minutes- ... has now turned into a full-fledged gold standard center for excellence on how to deliver care
Arthur: in communities
Cody: that don't have access.
We
have amazing partners, Henry Schein, they're the largest medical and dental
Arthur: in our country. Henry Schein
Cody: Cares is their nonprofit team- that helped turn our m- our foundation into a real clinic.
And we've got top of the line technology and scanners- from other partners like SprintRay, which we have here in the office, and we're able to help people every
Arthur: time we do it, and the goal
Cody: is to make that all year round
Arthur: free to the people so we can just expand
Cody: that
Arthur: impact.
So exciting. America, -
something's, one [00:32:00] hears, "How can I be of service? How can I help you today?" Or, I think about your education system and, y- you just see Americans, the way that one sees this desire to contribute and, evidence of contribution, so people donating to their university, giving back.
Or, "How can I contribute?" "People have helped me, how can I, how can I-" ... put back in? And yeah, hopefully that's something that can be emulated and look- looked at more and more. It must move your family the whole time about- Yeah ... what you guys do with that.
Totally.
Cody: The great quote, I think it's Picasso,
Arthur: he said "The meaning of life is to find your gift.
Cody: The purpose of life is to give it away." And the providers that come on the mission, now I don't, I'm not a dentist. I
Arthur: go to dental school. Yeah. So
Cody: I
Arthur: am
Cody: not like our providers, but we have team members who come and they,
Arthur: on the mission, they reignite their true purpose of
Cody: their, of what they do.
We had [00:33:00] dentists who were about to quit dentistry,
Arthur: and then came on the mission and, had the
Cody: awakening of "Oh, no, I'm... This is my life's work." And to be able to see that and do that is really powerful.
Arthur: Very moving.
Cody, it's been such a pleasure to have you here today,
Cody: Likewise.
Arthur: Thanks for having me ... for so many reasons. We very luckily get to dip into different worlds. And today we've dipped into the world of healthcare, org care , but also dipped into culture and learning from you and, through your family as well, just, a culture of care.
You know- ... how can we contribute? Here we are in, a very privileged area business, salespeople who are... at the top of their game. But, looking at the work with your foundation and how you really give to people, make them smile and really contribute
What could be more inspiring? So it's been a real pleasure, so thank you. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Awesome.
